Sowing Seeds of Compassion through Humane Education

In India, it is not uncommon to see the following in our everyday life:

  • People looking the other way when somebody meets with a road accident
  • Children abusing animals for fun and adults exploiting them for commercial gains
  • People plundering the earth without a care for the environment

These behaviors are manifestations of people’s lack of empathy, compassion and care for their surroundings, mainly due to overall unawareness about these issues.

STRAW, through its humane education programs, reaches out to school children, in particular so that they could grow up to be empathetic, compassionate and responsible citizens of tomorrow. We do this by contributing contents about compassion, to school textbooks brought out by various educational boards in the country. Additionally, we conduct school & college workshops and outdoor conservation classrooms. We also distribute information leaflets and publish useful information on our website to help to reach out to a wider audience.

Community Outreach to Break the Cycle of Violence

Raising public awareness about the importance of a sustainable society, in which people and animals live in harmony with nature, is one of our key mandates. Considering the large population of India, we soon realized that spreading our messages of empathy and compassion on a 1-on-1 basis would take us an enormous amount of time and resources. Hence, to speed up the process of reaching out to large number of students, we started contributing humane and animal welfare content to school textbooks and teachers’ manuals. These textbooks and manuals are regularly brought out by the central and the state educational boards in India, wherein the content provided by us has become part of the curriculum, which is being currently taught to students.

Besides this, we do leafleting at public places, make presentations at large gatherings and carry out essay writing and painting competitions on the topics of animal welfare for young children.

Animal Helpline for Rescuing Animals in Distress

STRAW runs an Animal Helpline whose aim is to help animals in distress across cities in India. Besides coordinating rescue effort, STRAW provides counsel to various pet owners and others, who call to resolve a variety of issues relating to pets and stray animals in their neighborhoods.

Arranging for the adoption of abandoned pets and stray puppies, providing referrals to other organizations and veterinarians are some other tasks undertaken by STRAW's Animal Helpline.
